এক পাতা টিপ, কাচের ভাঙা টুকরোগগুলো তারা জমিয়ে রাখতে জানে ,
তাদের একগুণ ভালোবাসা দিলে, তারা জমিয়ে দ্বিগুণ করে দিতে পারে,
মাস ছয়েক আগে কাপড় কাচতে গিয়ে স্বামীর পকেটে থাকা টাকাটাও বছর খানেক পর স্বামীর বিপদে নিসংকোচে বের করে দিতে।
দশ মাস দশদিন নিজ সন্তানকে উদরে ধারণ করতে জানে,
বাকি জীবনে সন্তানের বিপদে নিজেকে সপে দিতেও জানে।
মেয়েরা স্মৃতি, ভালোবাসা, অভিমান জমিয়ে রাখার অদ্ভূত ক্ষমতা নিয়ে জন্মায়।

নিজের অট্টালিকায়, তাহার শয়নকক্ষে, বড়দিদির কোলে মাথা রাখিয়া সুরেন্দ্রনাথ মৃত্যুশয্যায় শুইয়া আছে। পা-দুটি শান্তি কোলে করিয়া অশ্রুজলে ধুইয়া দিতেছে। পাবনায় যতগুলি ডাক্তার-কবিরাজ সমবেত চেষ্টা ও পরিশ্রমেও রক্ত বন্ধ করিতে পারিতেছে না। পাঁচ বৎসর পূর্বেকার সেই আঘাতে এখন রক্ত বমন করিতেছে।মাধবীর অন্তরের কথা খুলিয়া বলিতে পারিব না। আমি নিজেও ভাল জানি না, বোধ করি, তাহার পাঁচ বৎসর পূর্বের কথা মনে পড়িতেছে। বাড়ি হইতে সে তাড়াইয়া দিয়াছিল, আর ফিরাইতে পারে নাই; পাঁচ বৎসর পরে সুরেন্দ্রনাথ কিন্তু তাহাকে ফিরাইয়া আনিয়াছে।

সন্ধ্যার পর উজ্জ্বল দীপালোকে সুরেন্দ্রনাথ মাধবীর মুখের পানে চাহিল। পায়ের কাছে শান্তি বসিয়া আছে, সে যেন শুনিতে না পায়–হাত দিয়া তাই মাধবীর মুখ আপনার মুখের কাছে টানিয়া আনিয়া বলিল, বড়দিদি, সেদিনের কথা মনে পড়ে, সেদিন তুমি আমাকে তাড়িয়ে দিয়েছিলে। আমি তাই এখন শোধ নিয়েছি, তোমাকেও তাড়িয়ে দিয়েছিলাম, কেমন, শোধ হল ত?
