Jumbangla Desk: The water of Teesta river in Lalmonirhat has started to decrease. The flood situation is becoming normal. Although water has receded from some higher areas, the lower areas are still inundated. In many places, roads, houses and agricultural crops are under water. About 50,000 people in Char area and lower areas of 14 unions of Lalmonirhat Sadar, Aditmari, Kaliganj, Hatibandha and Patgram upazilas of the district are in water-logged condition.

So far, the district administration has allocated 5 lakhs for child food, 5 lakhs for cattle, 3 lakhs and 90 metric tons of GR rice for the people of flood affected areas. In the meantime, distribution work has started through local public representatives.

Today at 12 noon on Monday at Dalia point of Teesta barrage, the largest irrigation project in the country, it can be seen on the surface, the water of Teesta river is 43 cm above the danger level and water is flowing below the danger level at Kaunia point of Rangpur by 11 cm.

Before this, the water level of Teesta river in Lalmonirhat increased due to heavy rains and upstream flows for the last three days. In this, water flows above the danger limit at Dalia point of Teesta barrage and Kaunia point of Rangpur. 44 cisterns of Teesta Barrage were opened. Due to the rise in water, floods occurred in various riparian char areas and low lying areas of Hatibandha upazila including Gokunda, Rajpur, Khuliagach Aditmari upazila, Mahishkhocha of Khuliagach Aditmari upazila, Char Govardhan, Kaliganj upazila, Gaddimari and Patgram upazila.


Roads, agricultural crops, houses, various educational institutions have been submerged in the flood. The railway line was submerged in water, as a result of which the speed of the train was reduced and the movement of trains in various districts including Dhaka was seen. For the last two days, 70 thousand people of 14 unions of the district were trapped in water. As the water receded since Sunday afternoon, the flood situation is becoming normal. About 50,000 people are stuck in water so far.

According to the agriculture department, field level survey work is going on to see how much damage has been done to various crops such as saplings and vegetables in the riverside areas including grazing areas. Short-term flooding will cause damage to vegetable crops, but will not affect seedlings.

Shunil Kumar Roy, executive engineer of Lalmonirhat Water Development Board, said that since there is no chance of rainfall, the flood situation may return to normal in the low-lying areas along Teesta river in Lalmonirhat, Nilphamari, Rangpur, Kurigram and Gaibandha districts. Erosion can occur immediately after the flood waters recede. For this, some disaster and emergency projects have been undertaken by the Water Development Board. Where erosion occurs, erosion will be dealt with.
