Jumba Bangla Desk: Journalist Shafiq Rehman, who was sentenced to seven years in prison in the case of conspiracy to kill Sajib Wazed Joy, son of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and his IT advisor, has surrendered in court.

He surrendered through his lawyer in the court of Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate of Dhaka Mahbubul Haque on Monday (September 30).

The Ministry of Home Affairs suspended his sentence in this case for one year on the condition of appeal. Today he surrendered and requested the supply of duplicates required for the appeal. At the same time, he requested to withdraw the arrest warrant. The court granted his request.

In this case daily Amar Desh editor Mahmudur Rahman surrendered and applied for bail on the condition of appeal, the court rejected it and ordered him to be sent to prison.

Last year on August 17, former judge of this court Asaduzzaman Noor sentenced 5 people including Mahmudur Rahman, Shafiq Rehman to 7 years imprisonment. They were sentenced on two separate charges. At the same time, they were sentenced to another month's imprisonment without paying a fine of 5 thousand taka.

The convicted accused are Shafiq Rehman, former editor of Jazayedin newspaper, Mahmudur Rahman, acting editor of Dainik Amar Desh, Mohammad Ullah Mamun, vice-president of Nationalist Social and Cultural Organization (Jasas), his son Rizvi Ahmed alias Caesar and Mizanur Rahman Bhuiyan, an expatriate businessman from the United States.


As the accused were absconding at the time of the verdict, an arrest warrant was issued against them along with a sentence warrant. In this case, on 13 November 2022, Sajib Wazed Joy testified in the court.

On August 3, 2015, Detective Police Inspector Fazlur Rahman filed this case at Paltan police station.

It is said in the case complaint that from any time before September 2011 till now BNP's cultural organization Jasas Vice-President Mohammad Ullah Mamun along with high-level leaders of BNP and BNP-led alliance of other parties at Jasa's office in Paltan in the capital, accused in New York City, United States, United Kingdom and Bangladesh. With the connivance of Prime Minister's son and his technical adviser Sajeeb Wazed, Jai was kidnapped and conspired to be killed in America.

On February 19, 2018, the police filed a charge sheet against five people including journalist Shafiq Rehman. Shafiq Rehman was arrested in this case on April 16, 2016. He was later released on bail and absconded.
