Jumbangla Desk: The bank accounts of former Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Habibur Rahman and his wife and children have been seized. At the same time, the bank accounts of his wife, children and family members have been asked to be suspended.

The Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU) of the Bangladesh Bank has sent instructions to the banks and financial institutions of the country to freeze the accounts.

A senior official of BFIU confirmed this information to the media on Monday (September 30).

The accounts of Habibur Rahman and his wife Wazed Shamsunnahar and their children will be closed for personal and privately owned company accounts. For next 30 days do not do any kind of transaction on these accounts. If necessary, this period of suspending the transaction will be extended.

BFIU's letter said that relevant provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Rules will apply to this order to suspend transactions. In the letter, Habibur Rahman and his wife's name, national identity card information has been given.


The BFIU directive further states that banks and financial institutions have been asked to send the account-related information or documents (account opening form, KYC and transaction statement) to them within 1 working day from the date of letter in case of suspension of an account.

Sheikh Hasina's 16-year rule ended in a bloody revolution on August 5. He fled the country and took refuge in India. After this action was taken against the corrupt officials of his time. Habibur Rahman was known as an influential police officer during the Awami League government. On August 7, Habibur Rahman was transferred from the post of DMP Commissioner and attached to the Police Directorate. Then he was retired from service on August 13.

There are various allegations against him including being in a hostile position to suppress the movement. He is accused in multiple murder cases.
