APS of the former state minister has raised salary for 13 years without taking classes

Jumbangla Desk: An allegation has been made against Shishir Sarkar, a teacher of Abhyacharan Secondary School of Shalikha Upazila of Magura, of illegally drawing salary for 13 years without ever taking a class in the school. He is working as an assistant teacher (English) in that school.

Accused Shishir is the son of Jugal Sarkar of Asba village of Magura Sadar Upazila. He is a former Member of Parliament of Magura-2 Constituency during the Awami League government and former Minister of State for Youth and Sports. Biren was Shikdar's Personal Assistant (APS).

Locals said that teacher Shishir Sarkar never came to school regularly after being appointed to the job. Even the current and former students have never seen him in class as a teacher. However, he used to withdraw salary and allowances regularly.

Being the APS of the Member of Parliament, he would go to the school at the end of the month and sign everything at once, showing his power. And he used to take the institutional salary of the school and the government part of the salary from the bank. Due to his relationship with the MP, no one could talk about the matter till now.

According to the sources of the school and district secondary education office, Shishir Sarkar joined Abhyacharan Secondary School as an assistant teacher on March 12, 2011. Since then he has been drawing regular salary. Shishir also received the salary of last August.

Shishir came to the school last August 6. He applied for two months leave on that day citing illness. The school authorities have approved the leave.

The head teacher of the school, Mamata Majumdar, said that the assistant teacher Shishir Sarkar has no chance to deny the withdrawal of salary without coming to the school. I didn't have that much power to bring him to school as he was an APS of Magura-II Constituency Member of Parliament. So I never dared to say anything to him.

After the collapse of the Awami League government on August 5, the former member of parliament of Magura-2 seat. Biren Shikder's house was attacked, vandalized and set on fire by the angry crowd. Biren Shikder has been in hiding since that day. Because of this, his statement was not available.

President of the School Managing Committee and Shalikha Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Hasina Mumtaz said, the fact that the teacher has been illegally withdrawing salary for 13 years without going to Shishir's class is definitely shameful. The matter will be investigated and legal action will be taken.

District Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Officer Alamgir Kabir said that the head teacher Mamata Majumder had written a complaint last Thursday about the fact that Shishir Sarkar had not conducted classes and was withdrawing his salary. No one has complained to us about this before. The matter has been reported to the District Commissioner. A three-member committee has been constituted to probe the allegations and has been asked to submit its report within the next week.
