Jumbangla Desk: 'How much do you need, I would have given you more. I would have sold the cow if my father had not given me. You are mine.' Feroz Hossain (20), the younger brother of the deceased student Rubel Hossain (22), was saying these things while lamenting around 3 pm today. Meanwhile, he was repeatedly fainting from grief.
Feroze said, 'My brother was calling and asking for money for several days. On Sunday, I gave 8 thousand, another brother gave 4 thousand, Hasan uncle gave 8 thousand. They used to ask for the brother's money as a hostage. I paid 60,000 to 70,000 taka in a few days. I didn't get money anymore. Then the brother killed him without getting the money.' According to him, Rubel had been asking his relatives for money on his mobile phone for a few days to buy a laptop.
He also said, 'They (unknown) have tied my brother's hands, feet and face and beat him with a stick and thrown him from the roof. Many scars on the chest and back. I want fair trial. I want the accused to be hanged.'
Meanwhile, mother Ripa Khatun mourns the loss of her child. Nothing stops her crying. He was saying in a tearful voice, 'Laptop is my better genre. I am paying 6 and a half thousand rupees. Jemba (how) my better life grows. I am Sembaya Jaan Chaire. I want to know Jan's place.'
Deceased Rubel Kushtia is the third of four children born to farmer Shahidul Islam and housewife Ripa Khatun of Mirzapur village in Shilaidah union of Kumarkhali. She has two elder sisters Sharmin (32) and Shapla (26). they are married Younger brother Feroz Hossain has recently stopped his studies and started farming. He is a sixth semester student of Power Department of Kushtia Polytechnic Institute.
Around 10:30 pm on Tuesday night, he was thrown from the roof of a four-storey building in Kushtia Courtpara area with his hands, feet and face tied. Locals rescued Kushtia and admitted him to the 250-bed General Hospital. When the condition worsened, Rubel died at around 12:30 pm on the way to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital for better treatment. He lived in the third floor dormitory of that building.
After going to Mirzapur in the afternoon, it was found that Rubel's frozen body wrapped in polythene was kept in an empty space on the road behind the house. Relatives and eager crowds gathered to catch a last glimpse of him. The air is heavy with their cries. The whole village is stunned. They demand proper investigation of the incident and exemplary punishment of the culprits.
Meanwhile, Rubel's childhood friend and cousin Rocky Ahmed said, Rubel is a very boyish boy. There is no bad reputation in the area. He was not involved in any politics. Last Saturday and Sunday, Rubel asked him to borrow 5000 taka over the phone talking about the laptop.
Neighbor Md. Alimon Hossain Siam regretted and said, whatever happens. So why should someone be killed like this? He wants exemplary punishment for those involved.
Kushtia Model Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Dipendra Nath Singh said that the father of the deceased college student has filed a complaint at the police station. Further investigation into the incident is underway. Six people have been taken to the police station for questioning in this incident.
