It has been revealed that after the Awami League came to power in 2008, the former MP of Daudkandi Subid Ali Bhuiyar chose Rakib as his baton. He was basically a snitch then. The economic situation was fragile. With the help of Subid Ali Bhuiyan, he soon started extortion from Daudkandi toll plaza to transport sector, waterways, ferries, Balumhal. There are allegations of torture and harassment of BNP-Jamaat leaders and activists including many students. After the fall of the government on August 5, Awami League leaders and activists fled the area. But for mysterious reasons, this famous extortionist is still in custody. He is still on probation for being involved in multiple murders in the student movement.
Locals said that Rakib has kept control of all sectors of extortion by handing out some BNP leaders and activists. Abu Bakar, a sand truck driver, said that no sand truck can leave the palace without paying Rakib's people. Next to the toll plaza was the Sramik League office. There was his hideout. The Awami League government has gone from zero to billions of rupees. Among his notable assets are a 12-storey tower under construction in Kajala, Dhaka jointly with his brother-in-law Mahfuz, a 5-storey house in Donarchar, a house and land in Gazipur, 10 shops in Daudkandi World Road Toll Plaza area, agricultural land and plots in the area.
Daudkandi Upazila Awami League General Secretary Engineer Mohiuddin Shikdar said that Sramik League President Rakib Uddin was close to the family of former MP Subid Ali Bhuiyan. It is true that he controlled the transport sector, waterways and ferries. Rakib is an extremely privileged person during the Awami League government. He used to collect GPs and subscriptions for transport and waterways.
Billal Hossain Sumon, former councilor of 5th ward of Daudkandi Municipality, said that Rakib Uddin is still holding the empire of transport and waterway extortion with his cadre forces. Comilla North District BNP Member Secretary AFM Tarek Munshi said that strict action will be taken if any BNP leader is involved in extortion. Moreover, even if Awami League harbors any corrupt person, action will be taken according to organizational rules.
