The US has accused five Chinese students studying in the US of spying on a sensitive military base. US authorities claim the accused are lying and their movements are suspicious. This information was reported in a report of the Associated Press (AP) on Thursday.
In recent times, there has been a tense situation in China-US relations on various issues including military, commercial. In this context, five Chinese citizens were arrested in the United States on charges of espionage.
According to the report, these five accused are students of the famous University of Michigan in the United States. They were hovering suspiciously near a key US defense force base in Michigan. They were also charged with misleading investigators and conspiring to delete phone photos. The country's intelligence agency has filed an official complaint in the US federal court.
The FBI told the court on Tuesday that these students from China took pictures of important US defense facilities. However, there is no information about where they are currently.
U.S. Attorney's Office spokeswoman Gina Balaya said Wednesday that the defendants are not in police custody. If they turn themselves in to US authorities, they will be arrested and charged.
In August last year, the accused first came to the attention of US authorities due to suspicious movements. In the beginning they claimed to be journalists.
