Police and RAB have arrested 19 leaders and activists of Awami League and allied organizations from different areas of Rajshahi. Among them, there are 9 people in Bagmara of the district and 5 people in Durgapur upazila, 2 people in Tanore and 3 people in the metropolitan area.
RAB and police arrested them from their respective areas on Tuesday night.
The arrested have been sent to the court showing their arrest in various cases including murder filed in connection with the recent student movement.
On Tuesday night, a team of RAB-5 arrested Mohaimenul Islam Manik (38), Jubo League leader Jahangir Alam (52) and Chhatra League leader Sujan Islam (30) from Meherchandi area of Chandrima police station in the city. Manik Rabi is said to be an employee and contractor among those arrested.
RAB sources said that the arrested persons are the accused in the murder case filed by Rana Islam, brother of Ali Raihan, the brother of camp leader Ali Raihan, who was killed in the attack on a procession in the city's Alupatti during the students' movement on August 5.
Meanwhile, those arrested in Rajshahi's Durgapur are Mehdi Hasan (28), former president of Jayanagar Union Chhatra League of the upazila, Jahrul Haque (35), Jhaluka Union's 7th Ward Jubo League President, Kismatganakour Union Farmers League General Secretary Aslam Ali (37), Shalgharia area Jubo League worker Suman (38). and Masud Rana (30).
On August 4, activists were arrested in the case of the attack on the students' procession in Durgapur. SI Abdur Razzak of Durgapur police station gave this information.
Meanwhile, Awami League leaders arrested in Bagmara are - Upazila Awami League Forest and Relief Affairs Secretary Moslem Ali, Upazila Swachhasebak League Organizing Secretary Monayem Hossain, Goalkandi Union No. 2 Ward Awami League General Secretary Firoz Sardar, Bhabaniganj College Chhatra League Vice President Naimur Islam, Taherpur Municipality No. 8 Ward Awami League Vice President Akkach Ali, Hamirkutsa Union No. 8 Ward Krishak League General Secretary Belal Hossain, Nordash Union Ward No. 9 Awami League President and UP member Abdul Khalek, the same Union No. 1 Awami League former president Abul Kashem and Upazila Krishak League Joint General Secretary Nazrul Police arrested Islam. They have been arrested in two cases of vandalism and violence and have been sent to court, said Officer-in-Charge (OC) Touhidul Islam of Bagmara Police Station.
On the other hand, the names of the two arrested in Tanore are not known.
