Jumbangla Desk: An agreement has been signed to import 40 MW of electricity from Nepal through India. The agreement was signed between Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB), Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) and India's NTPC Vidyut Business Nigam Limited (NVVN) at a hotel in Kathmandu on Thursday.

Under this agreement, 40 MW of electricity will be imported from Nepal to Bangladesh through India for five months from June to November next year.

Environment Advisor Syeda Rizwana Hasan, Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation Minister of Nepal Deepak Kharka, Bangladesh Water Resources Secretary Najmul Ahsan and Nepalese Ambassador to Bangladesh Ghanshyam Bhandari were present at the signing ceremony.

A project to import electricity from Nepal was approved in a meeting of the cabinet committee on procurement of the ousted government last June. This electricity is supposed to come to Bangladesh using India's grid. At that time it was informed by the government that India will have to pay trading margin and transmission cost. It will cost 8 taka 17 paisa per unit.

At the time of approving the project last June, it was also announced that Nepal's hydropower would be imported through the Bheramara substation in Kushtia via the Indian transmission line.

Syeda Rizwana Hasan said at the signing ceremony, 'This agreement is an important step in the expansion of regional energy trade. It is not only a matter of meeting the immediate power needs, but also the process of ensuring long-term and environmentally friendly energy security of our countries.'

Earlier, Environment Adviser met Nepal Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli at Singha Durbar and discussed issues of bilateral interest.
