Jumbangla Desk: Director General (DG) of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) Major General Ashrafuzzaman Siddiqui said that BGB is partly responsible for preventing Awami League leaders and activists from fleeing the country.

In a press conference held at the BGB headquarters in Dhaka on Thursday (October 3), he said, 'However, the organization should not be solely responsible for the situation.'

The Director General said that BGB has so far detained 22 people identified as opponents of the anti-discrimination students' movement. 'Despite these arrests, a significant number of Awami League leaders and activists managed to escape across the border.'

Major General Siddiqui said that while the BGB is responsible for the escape incident, it is important to determine whether other institutions should also be held accountable.

"There needs to be an investigation to find out who crossed which border - there can be no compromise on that," he insisted.

The director general said that BGB was requested to assist in preventing escape through the border on August 6. It was an initiative undertaken independently and without any outside guidance. "We are working on it continuously. Our efforts will be much more effective if all intelligence agencies share their information.'

He also mentioned the rumors that a large number of Awami League leaders and activists have already fled the country. 'Did everyone run away? I don't think so. Some are still hiding in these densely populated areas of the country.'

Major General Siddiqui urged journalists to assist the BGB by sharing any relevant information they may have. 'You also have information. Please inform BGB, we will take action. We are determined to prevent these escapes.

The BGB Director General reiterated that the BGB is dedicated to playing their role in border protection and must cooperate with all stakeholders to effectively address ongoing issues.-UNB
