The Kalkoot bird is white-billed and black in colour. Kalkunch also says. English name is Common Coot. Scientific name is Fulica atra . Body size is 40 cm. The tail is very short. Kalkoot water bird. Tranquil lakes, reservoirs and haor-baor are preferred. Lives in groups, grazing. Get along with other waterfowl. Knows swimming well. A master at diving. Like a duck, it can dive and flip over to look for food under the water, only the tail stays above the water. Very brave, intelligent and clever.

Calcutta's diet includes young parts of aquatic plants and shrubs, small fish, frogs and aquatic insects. They can walk comfortably even on the ridge. He also eats rice if he gets a chance. For nesting, they prefer large haor-baord or dead river (in which the river has grown aquatic plants-shrubs algae and no stream) aquatic plants-shrubs or grass forest. Nests on the ground or on the bushes near the water. Both of them decorate the house together.

Lays 9 eggs. Yellow eggs, with brown spots. 7 and 8 eggs are more. Again 5/6 also happens. Two people take turns to give it to the egg. Hatch in 20/22 days. The young can fly at 25-28 days. However, within 1/2 days of birth, they jump out of the nest and move behind their parents and even ride on their backs if they get the chance. Children are very fickle.

Kalkoot is not seen much during other times of the year, but it is abundant in winter. I think, together with the Kalkoots from the neighboring countries, two or four Kalkoots of our country become one. I also feel that very few Kalkoots exist or remain in our country. They are the ones who raise eggs and babies in this country. Water birds therefore suffer from habitat insecurity as well as extreme insecurity.

There is no peace anywhere. There is no chance to recover. Lack of nesting sites is also evident. As well as the food crisis. Native water birds are therefore in dire straits. In winter, domestic and foreign waterfowl are sold in many bazaars and city-ports of Bangladesh.
