Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee confirmed this recognition of Bengali as a 'classical language' on her X (former Twitter) handle on Thursday (October 3) night.
He writes that his government has been trying to get this recognition for a long time. A research paper has also been sent to the Union Ministry of Culture in support of that claim. The center has accepted that demand.
Expressing great happiness at this news, Mamata said that the Indian government has finally recognized Bengali as a classical language. Attempts have been made to 'take away' this recognition for a long time. Three volumes of the study in this regard have also been sent to the Centre. He also commented that India's language culture has finally reached its peak.
On the other hand, the Ministry of Culture of India said in a press statement, if the history of a language or the age of the documents received is 1,500 to 2,000 years, if the difference between the original language and literature and the current language and literature is clear, then that language is recognized as classical. On receiving this recognition, the Center gives special grants for research and literary practice in that language.
Separate departments or centers are formed in various universities and educational institutions. The status of that language increases in the international arena. The status of a classical language requires special efforts to preserve ancient manuscripts, inscriptions, and rare books written in it. The opportunity to include this recognized language in the curriculum increases in various educational institutions of the country.
Therefore, as a result of getting the status of classical language, special awards and honors will be arranged for Bengali writers, researchers and linguists. Along with Tamil, Sanskrit, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Oriya, Bengali, Marathi, Pali, Ahmia and Prakrit have joined the list of classical languages.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi posted on social media X and said, "Our government works to highlight India's rich history and culture." We are responsible for popularizing regional languages. I am very happy that the Cabinet has decided to accord the status of classical languages to Assamese, Bengali, Marathi, Pali and Prakrit. These languages are wonderful, they bear witness to our extraordinary diversity.
