Jumbangla Desk : On the occasion of World Teachers' Day, UNESCO publishes a slogan every year. The slogan for 2022 was - 'Teachers are at the heart of education recovery'. Teachers are always the center of attention on teachers day which is normal. The theme of World Teachers' Day 2023 is "The transformation of Education begins with teacher". The theme for 2024 is “The Teacher's Voice: A New Social Commitment in Education”. However, this day will be celebrated officially in Bangladesh in a grander manner than other times. For which the Ministry of Education has already formulated a policy in this regard which is undoubtedly worthy of thanks. This policy will be called “World Teachers Day Celebration 2024”.

However, there are many countries in the world that celebrate Teachers' Day separately in their countries. For example, Teacher's Day in India is on September 5. Because India's first vice-president and second president. Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan's birthday on that date. So an eminent scholar, philosopher, and Bharat Ratna recipient, Dr. Radhakrishnan was born on September 5, 1888. Radhakrishnan taught at various colleges and universities including Presidency College, Chennai and Calcutta University. He served as the Vice-Chancellor of Andhra Pradesh University, Delhi University and Banaras Hindu University. He was appointed as the first Vice-President of India in 1952 and 10 years later, in 1962, Radhakrishnan became the second President of India.

Argentina celebrates this day as Teacher's Day on September 11, commemorating the death of Domino Faustino Sarmento. Similarly, Belarus celebrates Teacher's Day on August 14, Brunei on September 23.

According to UNESCO, World Teachers' Day is celebrated to recognize the outstanding contribution of teachers to education and development.

But this time there is hope for Bangladesh that the Cabinet has approved to celebrate October 5 every year as 'World Teachers' Day' instead of 'National Teachers' Day'. This approval is the result of a special effect of the movement of teachers for a long time and for realizing their various demands. In this regard, Education Minister Dr. Dipu Moni said, "The current government of education-friendly Sheikh Hasina is determined to protect the rights and dignity of teachers." He said this in a courtesy meeting with the leaders of the Freedom Teachers' Council (SWASHIP) at the official residence of the Education Minister on Hare Road in the capital on Tuesday (6 August 23). The Education Minister said, "Various teachers' organizations of the country have been demanding the celebration of World Teachers' Day as a state initiative for a long time, but no government has taken the initiative to celebrate this day. Considering the dignity of teachers, the Council of Ministers meeting chaired by the Prime Minister has decided to observe World Teachers' Day on the same day as the rest of the world from October 5." A lot of rumors are being heard in the teachers' society that a special surprise will be announced for teachers on Teachers' Day. But we have to wait till October 5 for that. Because it is quite logical and relevant to expect something special based on long-standing discrimination, teachers' intense movement and upcoming 12th National Parliament elections.

The day is celebrated in about 100 countries of the world. Education International (EI) and its 401 affiliated member organizations play a key role in celebrating this day. EI sets a theme every year that raises public awareness as well as commemorates the contribution of the teaching profession. So that a teacher in the society as well as in the state can take the state forward through his education. This day plays a very strong role in increasing the respect of teachers and the rights and duties of teachers. At one time, a teacher was considered to mean thick black-framed glasses and an umbrella under his arm. This meditation concept of Mandhata period is no more. This government is increasing the respect and honor of the teachers considerably, although with the current increase in the prices of the goods, the salaries of the teachers have to get a lot of speed. We are hopeful that this will also be removed soon with the announcement of new pay scales. Very few students used to write I will be a teacher while writing “goal of your life” essay in school or college life. Nowadays, talented people are choosing teaching profession as a great profession.

But as a teacher I have some personal opinions. This is particularly noticeable in the case of teachers with MPOs. Such as 25% festival bonus, nominal medical allowance and house rent, no pension after retirement etc. are the main obstacles. In the current context of the country, teachers are mentioned as a noble profession in books but in reality they are not given proper respect. However, one of the 21-point demands of the United Front elections in 1954 was "by reforming the education system, the gap between public and private schools will be removed and Bengali language will be introduced as a medium of education". 21 Many of the claims have been completed but this claim has only partially improved. For example, a minor political person is valued more than a teacher in any social event.

It is a dream come true for a teacher to be the chief guest or special guest at an event. Moreover, a teacher is not respected outside the school or college as they used to be. Mughal king Alamgir's poem 'Shikshakgurur Dirugam' is a tribute to teachers, much like Sunil Gangopadhyay's poem 'Ke Katha Rakheni'. Moreover, the discipline of the teachers' hand is no longer among them, as a result, the teacher does not do anything despite abusing the students silently. As a result, there is a lack of moral values in the society. Because we do not have the provision to harass or hurt a student. Although those who introduced this provision are also students of some teacher. As a child, I heard a saying in the vernacular, "Mothers give birth to ghosts, teachers make puppets". As an optimistic person, I also hope that honorable Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will be the worthy successor of Badshah Alamgir in Bangladesh. I strongly believe that a new teacher honor policy will be formulated like the new curriculum of 2023. 1000 taka house rent, 500 taka medical allowance and 25% festival bonus of basic salary is such low and shameful allowance for teaching society and will surely be changed later. This teacher's day will be the day to fulfill teachers' dreams. The government will announce a smart salary structure for teachers in Smart Bangladesh Binirman and a smart life system for teachers on this World Teachers' Day. In addition, we must remain unwavering in our position of educational research, teacher's professional sense and responsibility. It is only desirable that all kinds of inconsistencies should be removed along with respect of the teacher, increase in social status, good relationship between students and teachers.
