Jumbangla Desk : When you buy hilsa in the market, the first thing you look at is probably the eyes and belly of the fish. After checking whether the hilsa is fresh with the brightness of the eyes, it is tried to see how many eggs are in the stomach by touching the fish or turning it a little from side to side. In other words, everyone assumes that the hilsa in the market are female species. But have you ever wondered where the male hilsa go?

How does male hilsa become 'new moon'?

Bangladesh Fisheries Research Institute formulated a technical guideline titled 'Hilsha Resource Development Management Strategy'. It is said that from histological analysis of gonads of hilsa fish, hilsa fish usually reaches maturity at the age of 1+ years. However, due to weather variation and other reasons, Hilsa fish can mature even at the age of 8-10 months.

Until then, there is not much difference in the proportion of males and females among the hilsa caught. Then why the male hilsa became so rare?

The country's renowned hilsa researcher and fish scientist said to unravel this mystery. With Mohammad Anichur Rahman.

Dr. Mohammad Anichur Rahman: Hilsa is the highest caste of fish! But he is not seen everywhere. Even if it is caught in the river, it is not found equally in all the rivers. Although hilsa is not rare now, there are many secrets about this fish! The biggest mystery among them is 'Male Hilsa'.

In the beginning, the proportion of males and females in hilsa is almost equal. But the surprising thing is: whether these men become female after a certain age, that mystery is still under research.

According to Bangladesh Fisheries Research Institute, 3 species of Hilsa fish are found in our country. Tenualosu ilisha is more common among them; Which is commonly known as Hilsa. Apart from this, Chandana hilsa (Tenualosu toli) and Hilsa kelee/kanagurta (Hilsa kelee/kanagurta) of Kanagurta or Gurta species of hilsa fish are found in Kalebdra.

Dr. Mohammad Anichur Rahman: Tenualosa toli, also known as Chandana hilsa, has been seen in some places including Indonesia, when they are a little bigger than 40 cm, most of them are females. That is, they are becoming wives. One such mysterious information has been found, which is being discussed.

But we are not sure whether this sex change occurs in Tenualosa ilisha, which is the Padma hilsa, in our region. It is still a mystery.

At one time, everyone asked: Why is there no hilsa? Then hilsa started coming as a result of preserving jatka and protecting mother hilsa. After research, when the mesh size of 4.5 to 6.5 cm was determined, the size of the mesh was increased, then the relatively small hilsa was not caught in the net. With a year added to their life cycle, their egg production capacity also increased. Now the hilsa has not only increased, relatively large hilsa is available.

Seven or eight years ago, most of the hilsa that was available in the market was small. And the hilsa that comes now is big. Now the number of small hilsa in the market is less.

In his belief, Tenualosa Elisha still has half the amount of male and female.

Is the number of women Hilsa more than men?

According to the data of Bangladesh Fisheries Research Institute, the proportional rate of male-female hilsa fish varies depending on the place-time-size and species. The ratio of male to female fish is almost equal in juvenile age. This rate is 28-30 cm. remains the same until

Then the proportion of female fish increases and all fish above 44 cm are female.

Hilsa fish of Chandana species (T. toli) changes sex and transforms from male fish to female fish. 22.0 cm of this species. All fish were male up to size, 22.0 cm. 25/26 cm from The sexes of fish vary in size and all fish above 26 cm are female.

Dr. Mohammad Anichur Rahman: Male and female hilsa rates vary depending on place and age. If we talk about the rate according to age, when the hilsa is about 16 cm, it should be understood that the hilsa is going to become a full-fledged woman or man. When the size is large, the number of wives increases in the hilsa lot. And the smaller the size, the more males are seen.

The male-to-female ratio is usually 1:1 to 1:1.5 in 20-22 to 26-28 cm hilsa that have just matured into full-fledged hilsa.

But when the size becomes a little bigger, it can be seen that one male Hilsa is found for every two female Hilsa or two males are found against three females.

Here the creator may be creating in such a way that one male hilsa is enough for the productivity of two or three females. Means, if the number of women is more, the next generation will increase.

Who is ahead in beauty, wife or male hilsa?

Dr. Mohammad Anichur Rahman: Youth is the best time for all animals. It is the same in the case of humans as it is in the case of hilsa. If I give a human example, a boy becomes attractive at the age of 17-18.

Both male and female hilsa become incomparable in beauty when they are about a year old.

However, the female hilsa has more brightness and looks beautiful.

Who is the best in taste, wife or male hilsa?

Dr. Mohammad Anichur Rahman: If the size is less than 25 cm, we call it Jatka. When the size exceeds 28 cm, if its health is good, then in any region it moves, especially if it moves in Padma-Meghna, it accumulates fat in its body and looks dull. In that case, both male and female hilsa are very tasty.

When you press on the belly of the hilsa, if it comes out like white milk from the anal area, then it can be understood that it is a male. And if something of ghee color i.e. the color of her egg comes out, then you will know that it is a woman.

When the size of hilsa is close to 1 kg, both male and female have good taste.

Padma hilsa, a little twisted, a little thick. In the case of their female hilsa, its taste is greatest when it shines towards the belly.

Up to 21 lakh eggs are available in Hilsa fish. This egg matures in six stages. Nothing tastes better than hilsa when a female hilsa has only a few eggs in her stomach and those eggs are in the second or third stage.

When the egg reaches the fifth or sixth stage, i.e. the end, all the body fat, omega-three, fatty acids, i.e. the taste parts, go to the egg. Then you will get good taste of eggs but not the taste of fish.

Even if the hilsa is big, the taste increases. A hilsa can live up to seven years. But the big hilsa that is available in the market is usually two or three years old. He said that only three-year-old hilsa is rarely caught.

The researchers said that hilsa do not engage in sexual activity. Male hilsa release their foam-like sperm into the water. And when female fish release their eggs onto that foam-like broth, they are fertilized.

Dr. Chandpur Fisheries Research Institute. Anisur Rahman told a press, "The luster seen in female hilsa is not there in male hilsa. They don't look ugly, but they are somewhat unattractive. Therefore, these male hilsa are not found in the traditional fish market. Fishermen separate them and send them to be salted and dried. These hilsa preserved in local techniques are called 'salted hilsa'. Source: Time News
