Jumbangla Desk: To ensure the safe breeding of hilsa, hilsa harvesting has been banned for 22 days from October 13 to November 3. During this time, hilsa transportation, buying and selling, storage and exchange will be prohibited throughout the country. But why is this time closed to catch hilsa? Such a question arises in the mind of many.

The main reason for stopping hilsa fishing is to protect the breeding and breeding of hilsa. This is important for the increase and conservation of Hilsa fish population. During the breeding season, usually between September and October, the hilsa fish spawns, so fishing has to be stopped at a certain time. There are several favorable reasons behind this-

1. Hilsa breeding protection: During breeding, hilsa lay eggs and baby hilsa (jatka) grows. If hilsa is caught during this time, the eggs will be removed and reproduction will be interrupted. As a result, the number of hilsa may decrease.

2. Increase in fish population: If hilsa catches are stopped during the breeding season, the fish can hatch safely. As a result, the number of new hilsa increases and the balance of the marine ecosystem is maintained.

3. Ensuring Sustainable Fishing: Sustainable fishing can be ensured by safeguarding Hilsa breeding. This is essential to maintain the availability of fish in the long run.

4. Conservation by law and policy: The Bangladesh government enforces the 'Fisheries Conservation Act' to conserve hilsa. According to this law, catching, selling, storing and transporting hilsa during the breeding season is prohibited, so as to ensure the natural breeding of hilsa.

These measures help to increase the natural production of hilsa and play a helpful role in increasing the stock of hilsa in the future and thereby strengthening the economic condition of the fishermen.
