Jhenaigati, Nalitabari and Srivardi of the bordering upazilas have been flooded due to the sudden landslide. Water in Maharshi, Someshwari, Chellakhali, Bhogai and Mrgi rivers are flowing above the danger level due to continuous rains and landslides. This has greatly worsened the overall flood situation of Sherpur.
Hundreds of villages in three upazilas have been flooded again. And half a million people are stuck in water. Locals have not seen such a terrible flood in the last 35 years. People are running to higher ground in search of shelter as water enters the house. Due to the worsening flood situation, the administration has declared all educational institutions in Jhenaigati and Nalitabari upazila as shelter centers. However, most establishments have water.
Saleha Begum, a resident of Maharshi River, said that the kitchen, cowshed, tubewell and toilet were all submerged under water. The stove is not lit yet. So the stomach has not yet got a rash. Water is going 3 feet above the bed. He does not sleep in fear of water all around, when the house will collapse. There is also a snake infestation.
An old woman named Mamela Begum of Ghograkandi area of Nalitabari upazila said that she is unable to cook because of rising water in her house. I can't even feed the cows. I am in danger with all my family.
Aleya Khatun, a resident of Bellamari area of Nalitabari upazila, said, "I am going to a relative's house at a high place in the neighboring upazila with my two small grandsons." Leaving everything at home. I do not know when this flood water will subside. Whether anything is stolen from the house. Probably won't sleep because of this fear.
Montu Mia of Suryanagar Barabila area of Nalitabari upazila said that in the house there is knee water in some places, waist water in some places. He has no electricity for three days. The situation is getting dire. Life has become miserable.
Rajib Hasan of North Ranigao area of Nalitabari Upazila said, water in the whole house. There was a clay oven that has also sunk, I can't cook. There is no food or water. A relative of mine had cooked some food and brought it. Later, we as a whole family took shelter in the second floor of a local mosque. Later, the rescue team came and brought us to the shelter, he added, "I have never seen water so fast at this age."
Billal Hossain of Kurikahania area of Srivardi upazila said, we have not seen such a flood before. Not even a single piece of furniture is usable. There has been so much damage that I cannot explain. As the water is rising, the situation is getting worse.
According to information provided by the Sherpur Water Development Board, till 9 am on Saturday (October 5), the rainfall recorded was 37 mm at Sherpur and 170 and 100 mm at two points in Nalitabari.
Tarafdar Mahmudur Rahman, Deputy Commissioner of Sherpur said, Jhenaigati and Nalitabari fire service personnel took part in rescuing the trapped people. Relief assistance continues. However, on Saturday, September 5, Sherpur district BNP and various voluntary organizations are providing rescue and relief assistance to those trapped in the water.
