Jumbangla Desk: The flood situation has worsened in Sherpur due to continuous rains and landslides from upstream. The water of various rivers of the district has increased. New areas are being flooded. The floods that started on Friday (October 4) have so far claimed 7 lives. Many are missing. Besides, the people concerned are afraid of extensive loss of agriculture and crops.

Voluntary organizations along with local administration and BGB are working to rescue the water trapped people of Sherpur. Apart from this, Nalitabari army members have also joined the rescue work since Saturday (October 5) morning.
Meanwhile, 6 more unions of Sherpur Sadar and Nakla upazila have been inundated with flood water since Saturday morning. More and more areas are being reported to be flooded. Due to the continued downpour, the waters of Maharshi, Someshwari, Chellakhali, Bhogai and Mirgi rivers of Sherpur are flowing above the danger level. This has greatly worsened the overall flood situation of Sherpur. So far more than two hundred villages of 28 unions of 5 upazilas of Sherpur have been flooded. Nakla police officer-in-charge (OC) Habibur Rahman said, 'One person died in Nakla on Saturday night. Apart from this, five people died in Nalitabari upazila of the district and one in Jhenaigati.'
Jhenaigati Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Ashraful Alam Russell said, 'We have succeeded in rescuing the trapped people properly. Many have been taken to shelters. Clean water and dry food are being provided for them. 70 to 80 percent of the upazila has been flooded.
Nalitabari Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) Md. Masum Rana said, 'There are 123 shelters in Nalitabari. More than 10,000 people have taken shelter in 58 shelters. 12 unions of the upazila have been flooded. Of these, 5 unions have suffered more losses.
According to the information provided by Sherpur District Fisheries Officer Pranab Kumar Karmakar, 2 thousand 57 fish cages were washed away in Jhenaigati and Nalitabari upazilas alone. The loss amount is more than 11 crore rupees initially.
According to the Agriculture Office, at least 30,000 hectares of aman and 1,000 hectares of vegetable crops have been damaged in the district. At least 70 thousand farmers have been affected.

Rejayanke said, 'Shelter open schools will be closed for the next few days, regular classes will continue in areas where there is no water. Regarding the latest flood situation, Deputy Commissioner Tarafdar Mahmudur Rahman said, 'The water of several rivers in the district is flowing above the danger level.
