Flood situation worsens in Dhobaura-Haluaghat, army to rescue

Army members have been working since Sunday morning to rescue the prisoners.

Nishat Sharmin, the upazila executive officer of Dhobaura, said that at least five places including Ransinghpur, Panchanandpur, and Netai river dams have broken. Torrential rains this morning and Saturday night have flooded two new unions. Erosion has occurred at various places of Netai river embankment.

Almost half of the aman crop fields of the upazila have been submerged. At least 100,000 people belonging to 30,000 families of Dakshin Maijpara, Gamaritla, Kalikapur Jigatla, Ghonshgao, Porakandulia Union of Dhobaura Upazila have become waterlogged due to continuous rains.

At least 60,000 families of Dhobaura-Haluaghat have been trapped in the flood.

All the 12 unions of Haluaghat have been flooded, said upazila executive officer Md. Ershadul Ahmed.

He said the overall flood situation has not improved due to heavy rainfall. 1 lakh people of about 30 thousand families have become watertight.

The most affected unions of the upazila are Bhavankara, Ghazhirvita, Kaichapur, Narail and Dhurail.


About 20,000 acres of Ropa Aman land in Dhobaura and Haluaghat have been completely and partially damaged due to flash floods. Farmers are extremely worried about this.

Deputy Director of Mymensingh Agricultural Extension Department, Nasreen Akhter Banu, said that in these two upazilas, 38,800 acres of land were planted with saplings.

It is said that 10,880 fish in two upazilas were swept away by the flood.

District Fisheries Officer Mohammad Nazim Uddin said that at least 6,875 fishermen have been affected by the flood. A loss of around 50 crore rupees is expected in the fisheries sector.

When asked to know, Mymensingh Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Azim Uddin said that 20 metric tons of rice and two lakh taka have been allocated for the victims in two upazilas. To rescue the people trapped in the water, the army personnel started the rescue operation from this morning with eight speedboats.- The Daily Star
