Bangladesh has been able to achieve most of the targets (education, health, child marriage, etc.) that were set to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (in many cases, but it was not possible to achieve the target in the case of child marriage.
It may seem that only lower-class adult men marry under-age women, but the surprising fact is that the rate of under-age marriage is almost the same across the upper to lower-middle classes.
A statistic shows that 66% of girls in Bangladesh have to get married before they turn 18! But have we thought why men are married to girls younger than them? Let's find out the reasons-
1. Dominance – According to sociologists, men are used to dominating everywhere. And their family and family members are not left out of the circle of their practice of dominating.
And in our male-dominated society, the domination of husbands over wives is a very normal phenomenon. Hence, they feel more comfortable marrying younger girls.
2. Uncomfortable – Surprisingly true, men feel uncomfortable in relationships with girls of their own age. It is the idea that women who are equal to men cannot be controlled - this is what motivates men to marry women who are much younger than them.
3. Nipping in the bud - In our country, men reach the age of 30 to achieve social and economic well-being. And the common idea of our society is that girls grow old in the bud.
Therefore, naturally the age gap between husband and wife is very high in our society. 4. Future Security – Men have an ingrained belief that they will have no one to take care of them when they grow old.
Even children may refuse to attend to them. So, a younger wife is the solution to this problem. They believe that wives will never refuse to take proper care of them.
