Jumbangla Desk: An organization called Bangladesh Institute of Islamic Thought (BIIT) has demanded to make Arabic language education compulsory in the national curriculum. They demanded the formation of education reform commission to solve the crisis of education system and to ensure proper salary and social status of teachers.

These demands were raised from a press conference at Dhaka Reports Unity on Monday (October 7).

Director General of BIIT Dr. M. Abdul Aziz said that although many educational policies and plans have been formulated with the aim of improving the education system of Bangladesh since independence, in most cases it was an attempt to impose the thinking of the ruling group on the common people. These policies do not give due importance to the culture, values, and philosophy of the country. As a result, the education system is on the brink of collapse due to arbitrary changes in curriculum, wastage of state funds and ineffective decisions.

He said, although the National Education Policy 2010 has highlighted the ideals of humanity, rationalism, secularism, and patriotism, it has not been implemented in practice, instead an outdated education system has been imposed that is not in harmony with social and cultural values. In 2012, the national reform strategy emphasized moral education, but its implementation was not successful. The National Curriculum Framework launched in 2021 has also failed due to its lack of foresight and anti-ethnic elements in policymaking. Apart from this, a critical review of the Revised Strategic Action Plan (2018-2030) adopted by the previous government for higher education is also required. It is the responsibility of all of us to build an educated, moral, and skilled generation through the restructuring of the education system in the new chapter of the new Bangladesh.

Several recommendations on education reform are also highlighted. These include- elimination of urban-rural disparity in any scheme of education, ensuring adequate pay and social status of teachers, ensuring proper integration of life skills and subject-oriented, social and religious values in the curriculum, expansion of technical universities, research programs and effective steps to improve education. taking up, setting up training institutes for university teachers etc.
