Benapole Customs revenue officer Sheikh Zahidur Rahman confirmed the matter. He said, 42 lakh more eggs will come gradually.

According to customs sources, an Indian truck has entered Bangladesh with 104 boxes of eggs. Each box contains 210 eggs. The value of these imported eggs is 9 thousand 969 US dollars. The import price of each dozen eggs is 0.58 dollars, the price of each egg in Bangladeshi taka is 5 taka 70 paisa. 33 per cent government revenue is paid on the invoice price of every dozen eggs and all expenses are one rupee 84 paise. The total price of each egg stands at 7 taka 50 paisa. In this situation, the importers have demanded duty waiver on the import of eggs like onions and potatoes.

Dhaka-based importing company Hydro Land Solutions has imported 4 lakh 63 thousand 680 pieces of eggs from India in two consignments. Sri Lakshmi Narayan Bhandar of Kolkata is the exporter of eggs. C&F agent Ratul International filed the necessary documents at the customs house for the release of the consignment of eggs on behalf of the importer.


Shah Alam, a member of the importing company Hydro Land Solutions, said that the Ministry of Commerce allowed the import of 50 lakh eggs with a time limit of two months. Among them, for the second time, 4 lakh 63 thousand 680 eggs arrived from India in two consignments on the same day.

He also said that each egg was bought from India at the rate of 5 taka 70 paisa. But each egg has to pay a duty of 1 taka 83 paisa (including other expenses). If this duty was kept below 50 paisa, the price of eggs in the market would have come down a lot. They have written to the government to waive off duties like onion and potato.

Traders said that even though each egg is imported for 7 and a half taka, transportation, labor, wasteage (waste eggs) costs at least 3 taka more for each egg. Each imported egg is sold wholesale at the rate of 10 taka 60 to 70 paise.

Kazi Ratan, assistant director of Benapole land port, said the consignment of eggs imported from India is kept at the transshipment yard of Benapole port. The egg shipment is quickly redeemed after collecting the revenue.
