In nature there is a flowering plant that blooms every 12 years. One such flower has been found in the Western Ghats of India. There is a strange blue flower called Neelkurinji, which blooms every 12 years.

Neelkurinji is a symbol of auspiciousness to the tribals of that area. Its scientific name is Strobilanthes Kunthiana. This flower blooms in Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu in India. Everywhere this flower blooms once every 12 years.

A part of Pushpagiri Sanctuary is situated on Mandalpatti Hill. The height of this mountain is 4050 feet from the sea level. The distance of this hill from Medikeri town is only 18 km. The characteristics of this flower are - the flowers are blue and purple in color. The flowers are usually clustered, changing color continuously from bud to bloom.


Tourists from home and abroad flock here to see such beautiful changes of flowers. Neelakurinji is a bushy plant, which withers after flowering.

Once dried, it takes a long 12 years to bloom again. Usually Neelkurinji flowers only from August to October. After blooming last year, its beauty will be seen for the next time in 2033. This flower was seen in abundance in October last year.
