The NHC says Milton is heading toward Florida. Its wind speed was recorded at 281 kmph. It could make landfall on Wednesday night or early Thursday morning.

National Weather Service Director Ken Graham said Milton had grown to a Category Five hurricane at record-breaking speed. Its wind speed has increased to 148 km/h in the last 24 hours.

Floridians are being asked to prepare for the biggest evacuation effort yet ahead of the hurricane. State Governor Ron DeSantis warned that time to evacuate civilians was running out. "We have to assume it's going to hit in monster form," he said at a news conference Monday afternoon.


Just 10 days ago, the terrible hurricane Helen raged in the southeastern United States. It is the deadliest storm to hit the US mainland since Hurricane Katrina in 2005. At least 225 people were killed. Hundreds of people are missing. At least 14 people have died in Florida alone.
