What was known about Ismail Kani, the head of Iran's Quds Force

The Israeli forces carried out massive airstrikes targeting the potential head of Hezbollah, Hashem Safyeddin, in the southern suburbs of Beirut last Thursday night. A Lebanese security source confirmed that Safieddin has not been contacted since that day.

Now it is known that along with Safieddin, the head of Iran's Quds Force, Ismail Kani, is also missing. Kani went to Lebanon after Hasan Nasrullah was killed in Beirut on September 27. This news was reported by the news agency Reuters citing an Iranian official.

Iranian officials say Kani has lost contact with Iran and Hezbollah since Thursday. However, they denied that Kani was present in the meeting with the missing Safyeddin.

An Iranian official told Reuters that Kani went to Lebanon after the assassination of Nasrullah. Iranian authorities have not been able to contact Safieddin since the attack. Meanwhile, Hizbollah has not commented on Safieddin so far.

In 2020, the then head of the Quds Force, Qassem Soleimani, was killed in a US drone strike in Baghdad, the capital of Iraq. After his death, Ismail Kani was appointed head of the Quds Force, the foreign military intelligence wing of Iran's Revolutionary Guards Corps, by Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Part of Kani's job in that position was to manage Tehran's paramilitary allies in the Middle East as well as other parts of the world.

According to analysts, Qani never gained the same respect or popularity as his predecessor Soleimani. At the same time, Iran's allies in the Arab world have not maintained the same close ties.

In 1997, Kani became the deputy commander of the Quds Force, the foreign branch of Iran's Revolutionary Guard. Soleimani then became the commander in chief of the army.

Upon taking office, Qani pledged to expel US forces from the Middle East in retaliation for the killing of his predecessor, Soleimani. State radio quoted Kani as saying in Tehran ahead of Soleimani's funeral, 'We pledge to walk the path of martyr Soleimani with the same strength...and our only compensation will be to expel America from the region.'

If Kanye's death is finally confirmed, it will be a big blow to Tehran. Because the Quds Force provides money, military training and intelligence to pro-Iranian armed groups in the Middle East. The death of the army chief will disrupt this process to some extent. Because in the face of Israeli attacks, it has become difficult to establish communication there.
