Such was seen in Gouripur of Mymensingh. No one left a letter in the post box kept in front of the post office for a year. This year, not a single letter from lovers came to the post office! However, every month there are about 20 divorce letters!

Wednesday is World Post Day. In the name of providing modern customer service in 14 post offices of the upazila, the 'Digital Post Office' program has come to a standstill. 3 laptops, scanner machines, printers, IPS for 24 hours power facility, modern equipments are spent in each post office with about half a crore rupees.

Mohsin Mahmud Shah, Postmaster (EDA) of Bhavanipur Post Office of Bokainagar Union said that these parts have been damaged within a year. Working in government departments, we are called non-departmental employees. The money that I get paid does not even cover travel expenses.

He also said that now not a single lover's letter comes in a year, the postmen also do not have that kind of appreciation. But every month 20-25 letters of divorce!

In this context, the former head of psychology department of Gouripur Women's Degree College Professor Ahsanul Haque said that today's generation or young people are leaning towards mobile messages, short messages, audio-video due to internet. It is very easy medium. Many do not even know the post office. However, the importance and compassion of a letter is not present in today's short messages.

He also said that alienation is on the rise mainly because of the online availability of divorce. Also there are many reasons including child marriage and dowry abuse in the society.

Meanwhile, the activities of the main post office of the upazila are going on in the dilapidated building. The roof is leaking water. The plasters of the walls are falling off, the doors and windows are also broken. Due to the shortage of manpower, the customers of service activities are suffering.

Apart from the main post office in this upazila, there are 14 other post offices in 10 unions. There are various complaints against most of the post offices located at the union level for not carrying out postal operations on time. Each union post office has a postmaster on a salary of 4 thousand 485 rupees, a postman on a salary of 4 thousand 171 rupees and 1 runner on a salary of 4 thousand rupees per month.

The post offices are - Ramgopalpur, Bhavanipur, Douhakhla, Sakhua Magherchar, Shahganj, Gidhausha, Maoha, Killatajpur, Bhutiarkona, BirAmudpur, Pasharbazar, Lamapara, Railway RS and Mukhuria have post offices.

Upazila Postmaster Babul Chandra Das admitted that the roof tiles of the main post office were up and water was seeping inside the roof and destroying valuable documents. He said, because of the building, we are also suffering.

He also said that in this post office, 1 post of 3 runners is vacant, 3 posts of operator are vacant, 1 branch postmaster, 2 billingmen and 1 postman are vacant.

He said that an entrepreneur was appointed in each post office to turn the postal department into a digital post office. All post office entrepreneurs have left due to lack of desired income. Various parts of computers and digital machines provided in this sector are currently lying in broken condition.
