Five men were convicted of adultery, homosexuality and robbery, Taliban authorities said on Wednesday. They were each sentenced to 39 lashes and two to seven years in prison. However, nothing has been said about whether there are women among the convicts.

Since the Taliban came to power in 2021, hundreds of men and women have been flogged in various sports stadiums in Afghanistan. In June this year, the country's leaders publicly flogged 63 people, including 14 women, in a crowded stadium in the north for 'immoral offences' such as adultery and homosexuality.

The death penalty and corporal punishment violate human rights and international law, and the United Nations has called for an immediate end to these punishments.

Taliban leaders have defended their criminal justice system, arguing that it is consistent with their interpretation of Islamic Sharia law. They also rejected criticism of their restrictions on Afghan women's access to education, employment and public life.
