11 tigers have increased in Sundarbans in 6 years

He also said that the density of tigers and the number of cubs have increased. The advisor gave this information at a press conference on the occasion of announcing the results of 'Sundarban Tiger Survey-2024' at the secretariat on Tuesday (October 8).

According to the survey, 114 tigers were found in the 2018 survey, 125 tigers were found in the new survey.

The environmental advisor said, in the overall judgment analysis, the tiger survey conducted in Sundarbans in 2023-2024 found the number of tigers to be 125 and the density of tigers per 100 square kilometers of forest was found to be 2.64.

He also said that the number of tigers in Sundarbans has increased by 9.65 percent in 2024 compared to 2018 and the number of tigers has increased by 17.92 percent compared to 2015.

Rizwana Hasan said that tiger survey was first done in 2015 through modern method of camera trapping to determine the number of tigers in Su Ndarban . In that survey, the number of tigers was found to be 106 and the density of tigers per 100 square kilometers was 2.17. In 2018, 114 tigers were found in the Sundarbans tiger survey through the second phase of camera trapping and the density of tigers per 100 square kilometers was 2.55. Compared to 2015, there was an increase of 8 tigers in 2018 and the percentage increase of tigers was about 8 percent.

He also said that 7 thousand 297 pictures of tigers were found in the tiger survey conducted in Satkhira, Khulna, Chandpai and Sharankhola ranges of Sundarbans through camera trapping in the third phase. Such a large number of tigers have not been photographed before.


The environment advisor said that the 2023-24 tiger survey found a significant number of tiger cubs, but the number of tiger cubs was not included in the survey results. Because the death rate of tiger cubs is very high from small to adult.

The environment advisor said that 21 tiger cubs were photographed in the 2023-24 tiger survey, while only 5 tiger cubs were photographed in the 2015 and 2018 tiger surveys.

Rizwana Hasan said that the government has taken several important activities for tiger conservation. He said that 53.52 percent of the forest area has been declared as a protected area for free roaming and breeding of other wild animals of Sundarbans including tigers. Extraction of all types of forest resources is prohibited from there. 60 km long nylon fencing is being constructed in the area adjacent to the locality.

He also said that 12 earthen forts or mounds have been constructed inside the forest to shelter tigers and other wild animals during storms and floods.

In the press conference, Professor MA Aziz of Zoology Department of Jahangirnagar University said that Sundarbans has a favorable environment for tiger breeding. The number of tigers will increase in the future.
