Zoom-Bangla Desk: Velar fruit or marking nut is a kind of fruit, which was used to mark clothes before washing. The fruit is known as 'marking nut' or 'marking nut' as it was used for this special purpose. Although the common name of the tree is Vela, in fact, it has no resemblance to the raft floating in the water. Vela is a medium sized deciduous tree.

In Europe, a kind of fruit ink called 'marking nut' was once used by washermen for washing clothes. The fruit was originally used to mark clothes before washing them. Otherwise, it would have been difficult to recognize the clothes separately. The fruit is known as 'marking nut' or 'marking nut' as it was used for this special purpose.

The marking nut which is known as Vela fruit in our country came to know much later. I saw the tree for the first time in the botanical garden of Bangladesh Agricultural University located in Mymensingh about five years ago. Professor Mostafizur Rahman then showed me this beautiful tree named Vela. This garden is one of the richest regional gardens I have ever seen.

Professor Mostafizur Rahman and Professor Ashrafuzzaman have played a role in enriching the garden. I have never seen this tree in the forest before. Although the common name of the tree is Vela, in fact, it has no resemblance to the raft floating in the water. But not only Vela, the plant is also locally known as Bela, Beda and Velatuku. This plant grows naturally in the forests of the greater Sylhet, Chittagong Hill Tracts and Madhupur and is quite rare in the plains. The tree is easily recognized by its large and handsome leaves.

Semecarpus anacardium is a medium sized deciduous tree. The branches, petioles and leaves of this plant are covered with tiny hairs. Leaves are long, broad, thick and rounded at the apex. The color of the young leaves is raw green, but the mature leaves look dark green. The petioles are stout and two and a half centimeters long. Flowering season is spring. Flower arrangement is uneven, scattered and coarse type. Flowers mixed, small and clustered. The group is quite large, oblong and greenish-white in color compared to the Vritii. The fruits are scattered randomly on the branches. Usually, the fruit of this tree starts ripening around the month of May-June. The fruit is oblong oblong and can be up to two and a half centimeters long. Ripe fruits are black on top and orange on the underside. The lower part of the fruit is edible. A sticky juice is obtained from the upper part. This juice was once used by washermen in our country as an ink to mark clothes.
