Factory in Gazipur closed indefinitely

The closure notice was put up in front of the main gate of the factory on Saturday (October 12) morning, causing frustration and anxiety among the workers.

The management department of Jamuna Group said that the decision to close the factory has been taken under Section 13(1) of Bangladesh Labor Act 2006. For the last three days, about 6,000 workers have been agitating for their 13-point demands. They staged a sit-in at the main gate of the factory and stopped work and blocked the Kashimpur-Ashulia regional road and staged a protest. The demands of the workers included salary hike, improvement of work environment and provision of other facilities.

Even after discussions between the factory workers and management, no solution was found. As a result, the situation became heated. Finally, the authorities were forced to announce the closure of the factory. The workers came to the factory at 8 am on Saturday and expressed dismay after seeing the notice, and they went back to their homes.

The labor leaders said they have not received any commitment from the authorities regarding their demands. In this situation, they threatened to continue the agitation if the authorities did not meet the demands of the workers.

Roksana Akhter, a worker of Jamuna Denim Garments, said, "If the factory is closed at this time, we cannot think how we will continue." The price of goods is increasing day by day, it has become difficult to get daily food. Rent, children's education, medical expenses - everything is increasing, but income is not. Those of us who work in garments, have nothing to say about savings. I run the family somehow with what I get every day. In this situation, what will happen to us if the factory is closed indefinitely?

Another worker Ahmad Ali said, we were only stating our fair demands for a long time. We demanded, we will work naturally if the demand is met. So they will ignore our demands and close the factory, we never expected it. This decision is causing us great pain.
