Road blockade of workers demanding Puja holiday in Gazipur

On Saturday (October 12) around 2pm, the workers suddenly occupied the highway and stopped traffic. This creates a long traffic jam on both sides of the highway, which disrupts the movement of people in the area.

The workers complained that they had several rounds of discussions with the owners about the puja holiday but no decision was reached. As a result, they were forced to come down to the road to collect leave.

A worker, on condition of anonymity, said, 'Just as we get leave for other religious festivals in the year, we also want leave for Puja. But the right decision did not come from the owner.

On receiving the information, Shilpa Police and Jaidebpur Thana Police attended the spot. They try to pacify the workers and assure a negotiated solution to the problem. On the request of the policemen, after about an hour, the workers lifted the road blockade and the traffic flow was normalized.

An official of the Industrial Police said, 'Discussions are going on with the factory owners regarding the workers' demand for leave. We have requested the workers to maintain law and order and not create any kind of disturbance.'

At present traffic is normal on the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway. Discussions between the factory authorities and the workers are said to be continuing.
