According to information received from Benapole Customs, a total of 533 tons of hilsa fish went to India in 16 days from September 26 to October 12 this year. In view of the demands of the Indian government, several shipments of hilsa went to India through the Benapole port under special arrangements during the autumn Durga Puja holidays.

2 thousand 420 tons of hilsa was supposed to be exported to India this season. The target of hilsa export was not met in the current year due to lack of fish in the market and low supply. However, 53 lakh 30 thousand US dollars have come to the government by exporting hilsa.


The government has allowed 50 exporters to export fish to India this year at the request of West Bengal traders. At the end of the day only 20 authorized exporters were able to export hilsa to India. 30 exporters could not export any fish to India at all.

Benapole Fisheries Office official Mahbubur Rahman said that export of hilsa to India started from the second day of permission. On the first day, the fish export program started with the export of 54 tons of hilsa from the company of 10 exporters.

This year, the export price of hilsa per kg from Benapole Customs is fixed at 10 US dollars or 1180 taka.
