According to Shariah law, a child's paternity cannot be relinquished during adoption in such a way that the parents can never again identify themselves as the child's parents. Islam never supports this act. Because Islam says to stand by the helpless, but does not allow the possession of a child or the concealment of its true identity. The adopted child must inform him of the reason for the adoption and the identity of the biological parents. Otherwise, many times the child may feel abandoned.

An adopted child does not inherit from the adoptive parents , but if desired, the adoptive parents can give up to one-third of their total property as a gift to the adopted child. For that, the foster person should either bequeath the property during his lifetime or bequeath it, so that after the death of the foster person, he can get more than one-third of the property.

The Hindu community in Bangladesh is only able to adopt male children as per the restrictions set by Hindu law. Hindu law makes no distinction between natural sons and adopted sons in respect of inheritance. But after adopting a son, his relationship with his old family is severed as if he was born into a new family. Through a social ritual the adopted son shares rights, duties and responsibilities over his new family.

A Hindu male, whether married, unmarried or destitute, has the freedom to adopt. Women's rights are limited in this regard. An unmarried woman cannot adopt. Husband's permission is required for married women. Even if a widowed Hindu woman wants to adopt, she has to show permission given before her husband's death. Christianity also does not institutionalize adoption. Bangladeshi Christians can also take sole guardianship of the child.
