Jumbangla Desk: Seventy-five percent of the country's banks have surplus liquidity or excess money. The amount of liquidity in 46 public and private banks is about 2 lakh crores. Bankers feel that this is a relief for the banking sector as it restores confidence among depositors. However, economists say, if the excess liquidity of the bank cannot be used for investment, there will be a negative impact on new employment.

In the past decade and a half, dozens of banks are in liquidity crisis due to irregularities, corruption, smuggling and anonymous loans. However, confidence has started to return in the banking sector due to the liquidity support given to weak banks with the cooperation of Bangladesh Bank.

In such a situation, the opposite picture prevails in the banks. Every day the amount of customer deposits is increasing in these banks. In addition to government banks, about 31 private banks have additional liquidity of Tk 91 thousand 674 crores. And the amount of liquidity in five state-owned banks has exceeded 63 thousand 670 crores. Of this only Sonali Bank has Tk 49 thousand 43 crores. 9 foreign banks are not far behind.

Global Islami Bank Plc Chairman Nurul Amin says, 'This is a relief news. Although individually some banks or the vaults of some banks have been broken, there is some liquidity crisis going on in their case. How the bank will fare will depend on the business sector of the next 6 months. I hope, by December, there will be a stability.'

6 out of 9 fourth generation banks have excess liquidity. Economists suggest giving these extra money to a large number of customers instead of lending it to a specific few.

Research director of CPD Dr. Khandkar Golam Moazzem said, 'Now the law and order situation of the country should be brought back to normal as soon as possible. Apart from this, inflation should be brought down to a normal situation.'

Due to political uncertainty and lack of confidence, businessmen are not going to make new investments. Banks' loan disbursement has also decreased due to decline in investment. Therefore, analysts urge to create an investment friendly environment to increase credit flow.
