Columbus led Spanish-funded expeditions from the 1490s. This made it easier for the Europeans to conquer America. However, his birthplace and burial place are disputed in some countries.

Many historians believe that Columbus was born in Genoa, Italy. Some claim, from a Jew or Greek to a Basque, Portuguese or British citizen in Spain.

It took 22 years of investigation led by forensic expert Miguel Llorente to solve the mystery. Small samples of remains buried in Seville Cathedral in Spain are examined. Authorities have been saying for a long time that there are remains of Columbus here. However, there are different claims about this.

Researchers compared small samples of Columbus' remains with known relatives and descendants. The results of the research were presented in a documentary titled 'Columbus DNA: The True Origin' on Saturday on Spain's national broadcaster TVE.

Researchers say we have DNA from Columbus, very partial, but substantial. We have the DNA of his son Fernando Colón. Both Fernando's 'Y' chromosome (male) and mitochondrial DNA (from mother) have characteristics consistent with Jewish origin.

Columbus died in 1509 in Valladolid, Spain. He expressed his wish to be buried on the island of Hispaniola. The island is now jointly owned by the Dominican Republic and Haiti. Columbus' remains were taken there in 1542. It was then transferred to Cuba in 1795. It has long been believed to have been taken in Seville, Spain in 1898.
