International desk: Israeli mining magnate Benny Steinmetz has been arrested in Greece. However, he was released after his arrest. But he has been barred from leaving Greece because the arrest warrant issued against him by Romania has not been resolved. Benny was arrested by Greek police hours after he arrived on a private plane at Athens International Airport on Sunday evening (October 13).

Romania has issued a European arrest warrant against him for alleged involvement in a criminal organization, a police official said on condition of anonymity. Benny, 68, appeared before a judge on Monday. Then the judge released him. However, the judge imposed a ban on his travel as a condition of his bail as another case of arrest and extradition was pending.

Earlier in 2022, a Greek court ruled against his extradition, taking into account an arrest warrant issued by Romania. Later, Romania made a new request to return him.

Benny's lawyer, Stavros Togias, said in a statement that it was unprecedented for Greece or any other respected rule of law country that an administrative act could overturn a decision by the Greek judiciary.
