In the midst of rising prices of daily commodities, Salehuddin, the trade adviser of the interim government, asked reporters whether he would make eggs with a machine or not.

In the midst of soaring egg prices, the sale of wholesale eggs has stopped. Consumers are returning empty-handed while buying at retail. In this situation, a journalist had a question to the adviser, why this situation has been created with eggs.

Salehuddin replied, “You don't see the egg supply.. No. Your eggs are four to five crore eggs. Shall I make eggs with a machine from now on?”

On Monday evening, the advisor went to the caravan market and checked the prices of various products including rice, dal, chicken, edible oil. In this, it is known that the wholesale sale of eggs has been stopped.

On September 15, the Directorate of Agricultural Marketing fixed the maximum 'fair price' for eggs at the farm, wholesale and retail levels. But traders say that eggs cannot be bought from the farm at the maximum retail price that has been fixed. But they are penalized for selling above the 'fixed' price.

In protest against the fine, the sale of eggs has been stopped from Sunday in the area of Tejgaon next to the caravan market. Eggs are not available even in Chittagong. In this situation, there is concern about the availability of eggs in retail.

Since the start of the Ukraine war in 2022, inflation has been in double digits for almost two consecutive years, making life difficult for people. Market conditions were widely expected to be bearable after the fall of the Awami League government in a massive mass movement.

But it didn't happen like that. Instead, the price of eggs and vegetables has created a surprise. Import from India is also not affecting the egg market, it has stopped at Tk 60, it has become difficult to get vegetables except papaya at Tk 100 per kg in the market.

Adviser Salehuddin said, "Due to floods, heavy rains etc., the production of some products, including vegetables, has been lost in addition to the reduction in egg production. As a result, due to some shortfall in the supply chain, the prices of these products have increased slightly.”

He wants to know the information about the supply situation of daily necessities from the sellers in the market. He also requested the businessmen to make 'reasonable' profit.

The advisor went to M/s Rifat General Store and asked the price of several products. He also saw whether the price list was pulled.

Abdul Jabbar, a vendor at Himu Traders, told Trade Advisor that millers are 'holding on' to goods, there is a supply shortage.

"We have to pay demurrage as long as the goods are held by the mill. If the goods are not paid for seven days, then 14,000 taka is demurred.”

Later, Salehuddin told reporters, “The task force is monitoring the producer, wholesale and retail price gap to keep it at 'tolerable' level. Any increase in price on the basis of 'excessive profit' or opportunity will be strictly resisted."

Secretary of the Ministry of Commerce. Salim Uddin and Director General of National Consumer Rights Protection Directorate Mohammad Alim Akhtar Khan were present at this time.
