Jumbangla Desk: The court has granted bail to Syed Sadat Almas Kabir, the former president of Bangladesh Association of Software and Information Services (BASIS) in the case of student murder in the anti-discrimination student movement. He was released from the custody of the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court of Dhaka as there was no further case against him.

On Tuesday (October 15), the police produced him in the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court of Dhaka. After that, the investigating officer of the case, SI Mainul Islam of Mohammadpur police station requested to keep him in jail. On the other hand, his lawyer applied for bail.

His lawyer told the hearing that he was abroad at the time of the incident. Almas's lawyer showed the necessary foreign documents to the court. The state opposed bail. After hearing both sides, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Belal Hossain granted his bail.

Then the lawyer filed his bail. He was released on bail from the court jail as there was no further case.

Earlier on Monday (October 14) he was arrested by the Mohammadpur Police Station from Gulshan in the capital.


Student Akter Hossain (26) was shot dead on August 5 during the anti-discrimination student movement. Akhtar Hossain's father Obaidul Haque filed a murder case in the capital's Mohammadpur police station on September 27 in this incident. The names of 82 people including former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, Jahangir Kabir Nanak have been mentioned in the case. Besides, 100-150 leaders and activists of Awami League and its affiliated organizations were made anonymous accused.

In the case, Almas Kabir has been mentioned as an associate and financier of former IT State Minister Junaid Ahmed Palak.

He was an Associate Professor at Independent University Bangladesh (IUB). He was also a guest lecturer at National University and Northern University. Also held various administrative positions in IUB, North South University, City University.
