International Desk: Before the 1980s, it was not known that fish sing. But some houseboat-dwellers in California hear a strange noise late at night. Which was floating from deep in the water. And the noise from the depths of the water was so muffled that they mistook the noise for anything from military activity to the murmuring of alien creatures.

Midshipman fish

Later it is known that the sound coming from the bottom of the water is actually a fish named 'Midshipman'. The sound they make throughout the night is known as 'fish music'. According to biologists, this 'song' is actually a mating call. This noise is heard more during the breeding season.

Scientists have been researching for nearly three decades to find out where this noise comes from. In a research article recently published in the 'Journal of Current Biology', US scientists said that the hormone that works behind this music is not rare. The midshipman sings under the influence of melatonin, the hormone that induces sleep.

The most important fact is that the song is sung by male fish. However, scientist Andrew Bass claims that female fish are also capable of singing. He showed that a biological clock inside their body determines the rhythm of this song.

Why women's pockets are so small compared to men's

But understanding the mysterious world of hormones requires observing the midshipman's behavior, claims Andrew Bass.
