Thomas Tuchel has been appointed as the head coach of the England national football team. The Football Association (FA) sealed the signing of the contract with the 51-year-old German coach amidst many rumours.

The FA said in a statement that Tukhel will take charge of the Three Lions from January 1, 2025. His term of office is till 2026 Football World Cup.

Tukhel became England's third non-British coach. Earlier, Sven-Goran Eriksson and Fabio Capello have handled this responsibility as England's overseas coaches.

Chelsea won the Champions League title in 2021 under the 51-year-old Tuchel. The Blues cut him the following year. Tukhel was considered the favorite to succeed Gareth Southgate among the bookies. He was last in charge of Bayern Munich.

The statement quoted Tuchel as saying, 'I am very proud to have the honor of coaching the England team. I have felt a personal connection to English football for a long time and it has given me some incredible moments so far. It is a great opportunity to represent England. It's a thrill to work with such a talented team.'

Southgate stepped down from the national team job after England's title dreams ended last July when they were defeated by Spain in the Euro Championship final. Under-21 coach Lee Kersley was appointed as interim coach following Southgate's departure in August.

Kersley was primarily in charge of the Nations League in three international windows. Under Kersley, England won three games and lost one match. Carsley will be in the dugout in England's last two matches against Greece and Ireland next November.
