To protect mother hilsa, there is a 22-day ban on fishing in the Meghna river in four upazilas including Raipur of Laxmipur. Fishermen are not fishing in the river following the ban. Fishermen anchored trawlers and boats along the river bank. So the fishermen spend time repairing fishing trawlers and weaving nets.

However, the income of the fishermen has decreased due to less hilsa being caught in the river this time. They are worried about how they will spend the day with their families during the 22 days of the ban.

Meanwhile, 993 metric tons of rice has been allotted to 39 thousand 750 fisherman families of the district from the fisheries department. Each fisherman family will be given 25 kg of rice.

However, fishermen do not think that 25 kg of rice is enough for each family. Besides increasing the amount of food aid in the campaign, the fishermen's families also demanded that the assistance of the actual fishermen should be brought under the scope.

On the other hand, the Fisheries Department informed about conducting operations in the river to comply with the ban. Jail-fines are provided for fishermen who violate the law.

Ismail Majhi, the owner of the trawler in Chandarkhal area of Raipur, said that 18 trawlers are engaged in fishing. They came up from the deep sea before the campaign started. In their spare time, the fishermen are weaving fishing nets, so that when the expedition is over, they can catch fish.

He said, this time, not much fish was caught in the net. Therefore, the income has also decreased. Fishermen are worried about how they will survive the 22 days of ban.

Mainuddin, the fisherman of that area said, I am coming out of the river following the ban. I will repair the nets and go home. But now I am in financial crisis. No fish were caught in the net. So the pocket is now empty. Many of us fishermen do not even get government rice. People who are not jailers get rice.

Fisherman Abid Majhi said, fishing is stopped. So I am repairing the boat in my spare time.

Altaf Master Fish Ghat Artdar Khalek Bepari said that only 25 kg of rice is allotted to fishermen families. which is insufficient. 25 kg of rice will not last a family for more than a week or 10 days. He demanded to increase the amount of rice in food aid for fishermen.

District Fisheries Officer Billal Hossain said that the 22-day period announced by the government is completely prohibited and punishable for collecting, transporting, marketing, storing, buying and selling hilsa throughout the country. At that time the violator shall be punished with rigorous imprisonment for a minimum of one year to a maximum of two years or with a fine of up to five thousand rupees or with both.
