Yahya Sinwar, the head of the Palestinian independence armed group Hamas, was killed in an attack by Israeli forces. After his death, Khaled Meshaal, one of the founders of the movement and a member of its political bureau since its inception, is coming to the new charge of Hamas.

Khaled Meshaal 'Abu al-Walid' was born in 1956 in a village on the West Bank of Silwad. He received his primary education there before moving to Kuwait with his family. And after going to Kuwait, he completed secondary and higher secondary education.

Between 1996 and 2017, he served as president of Hamas' political bureau and was appointed its leader after the death of Sheikh Ahmed Yassin in 2004.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered the head of the Mossad spy agency to assassinate Meshaal in 1997. He asked to prepare a plan to carry out the murder.

10 Mossad agents entered Jordan with fake Canadian passports while Khaled Meshaal, a Jordanian citizen, was injected with a toxic substance while walking on a street in the capital, Amman.

Jordanian authorities discovered the assassination attempt and arrested the two Mossad members involved.

The late King Hussein of Jordan asked the Israeli prime minister for an antidote to the poison injected into Meshaal, but Netanyahu initially refused the request.

The assassination attempt took on a political dimension as US President Bill Clinton intervened to force Netanyahu to provide the antidote.

Meshaal visited the Gaza Strip for the first time on December 7, 2012. It was his first visit to the Palestinian territories since he left at the age of 11. Upon reaching the Rafah crossing, he was greeted by Palestinian leaders of various groups and national level, and Palestinians lined the streets to greet him until he reached Gaza City.

On May 6, 2017, the Movement's Shura Council elected Ismail Haniyah as the head of the Political Bureau.
