Importers are not able to import eggs through Hili land port in Dinajpur despite permission. They are blaming the discrimination and negligence of the customs for this.

Traders say that the cost of importing eggs through this land port will be reduced and the supply of eggs will increase in the northern markets. However, customs officials say traders can import eggs through this port if they are eligible for import.

The Ministry of Commerce allowed the import of eggs due to the sudden increase in the price of eggs in the country's market.

As a result, several businessmen of Hili land port of Dinajpur got permission to import eggs and it is clearly stated in the permission letter that businessmen can import these eggs through any land port of Bangladesh. However, the present importers are not able to import eggs through Hili land port due to customs discrimination.

Shahidul Islam, the importer of Hili land port, said that if eggs are imported through this land port, the cost will be much less, as a result of which the supply of eggs will increase in the northern region and the price will decrease. It costs US$ 0.58 per dozen eggs to import from India and the customs duty is around Rs 2 per peach egg. These imported eggs can be sold in the market between 10 and 11 rupees, said the businessman.

Sakhawat Hossain Shilpi, president of Hili land port import-export group, said that eggs are being sold at the rate of 14 taka per peach in the local market and at the village level, those eggs are being sold at the rate of 16 taka, which makes it difficult for the middle and lower class families to buy eggs. Since the government has allowed the import of eggs, we would have imported the eggs if Hili Customs had cooperated with our traders. By doing this, the price of eggs in the country's market would decrease further. He also said that an importing company named Alif Trerdas has received permission to import 3 million peach eggs through this port.

Nargis Akhter, Assistant Commissioner of Hili Customs Station, said, "We have some rules to import new products. We will discuss the matter with the above officials and help traders to import eggs quickly.
