Matia Chowdhury
Shafiqul Alam wrote, "The country's leading newspapers have honored Matia Chowdhury by bringing forward the important events of his long life.
But instead of dispassionate obituaries, they were mostly general eulogies, as if a murid were writing about his pir. It is clear that we grew up reading many Sufi Tazkiras, especially Tazkiratul Auliya and Tazkiratul Ambiya.'
The press secretary wrote, 'There is no doubt about his role as a student union leader in 1960. He has also played a role in some of the most glorious chapters of our history.
For example, from the student movement during the Ayub Khan period to the liberation war in 1971 and the anti-military movement of the eighties. A tragic writer must touch on these events.'
He also wrote, 'But you (the media) underestimated her role in Sheikh Hasina's dictatorship, how she demonized the student movement and how she became part of a fascist regime. You have brought forward the fact that the movement to establish democracy that has been going on for the last 15 years is getting less importance.
The way he hails the most corrupt dictator in history, you are actually legitimizing it.'
He also wrote, 'It is very sad that even after ages our newspapers have failed to grasp the art of grief writing. Or they support the Islamic practice of not criticizing the dead.'
Former parliament deputy leader Matia Chowdhury died last Wednesday while undergoing treatment at a hospital in the capital. His first funeral was held on Thursday at 10 am at his residence, Ramna Apartment Complex in the capital.
There, Bangladesh Awami League and various organizations paid floral tributes to his coffin. His second funeral was held at Bad Johar Gulshan Azad Masjid. After two rounds of Janaza, Matia Chowdhury was buried in the grave of her husband Bazlur Rahman in Mirpur intellectual cemetery.
