Ekushey Medalist artist Sujay Shyam is no more

He died while undergoing treatment at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University in the capital on Thursday (October 17) around 3 pm. He was 78 years old at the time of his death.

Sujay Shyam's nephew Sumit Shyam Paul confirmed the news of his death to the media.

He received Ekushey Padak in 2018 and Shilpakala Padak in 2015 for his contribution to music.

The National Film Award winning music director was suffering from physical ailments for a long time. He was under treatment in the Coronary Care Unit (CCU) of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University for about four months.


Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra's last song and the first song after the surrender of the Pakistani invasion forces was composed by Sujay Shyam. He composed and directed the music of the song 'Bijoy Nishan Udche Oi' written by lyricist Shahidul Amin. Ajit Roy was the main vocalist of the song. Among the songs composed by Sujeya Shyam are 'Rakt Diy Naam Kheychi', 'Rakt Chai Rakt Chai', 'Aha Dhanya Amar Janmabhoomi'.

Sujay Shyam was born on March 14, 1946 in Sylhet district of then British India. His father Amarendra Chandra Shah was the owner of a tea estate named 'Indreshar-T'. He spent his childhood in Sylhet tea garden. Sujay was the sixth of ten siblings.
