The United Nations Global Multidimensional Poverty Index, 2024 report has revealed these data. A total of 1 billion people in the world live in extreme poverty, mostly in Africa and South Asia.

To understand the multidimensional poverty situation, the United Nations has studied 6.3 billion people in 112 countries of the world. It analyzed over a decade of data up to 2022-23. It takes into account the deficit in basic human services like adequate housing, sanitation, electricity, edible oil and nutrition. Children's school attendance rate is also taken into consideration.


According to the Global Multidimensional Poverty Index-2024, the standard of living of the people plays the biggest role in poverty in Bangladesh. In this case, the country's poverty index is 45.1 percent. And in education -37.6 percent and in health 17.3 percent. In total, 4 crore 17 lakh people live in extreme poverty in the country.


Poverty levels are significantly higher in war-torn countries than in other countries. In these countries, there is great disparity in nutrition, electricity, water and sanitation. Of the 1.1 billion people living in extreme poverty, 45.5 million people live in the shadow of conflict. According to the index, about 584 million people under the age of 18 are in extreme poverty.


Almost half of the world's people living in extreme poverty are in India. Out of the country's 1.4 billion people, 23.4 million live in extreme poverty. It is followed by Pakistan, Ethiopia, Nigeria and Democratic Republic of Congo. Almost half of the 1.1 billion people living in poverty are in these five countries.
