Atiqul Islam developed a strong network of relatives during his tenure as the Mayor of Dhaka North City Corporation.

Through this network he extended his influence in the city building. Placing his nephews and nieces in various influential positions, they controlled the business and operations of the city corporation.

Even his niece Tawfiq was known as the second mayor in the DNCC, under whose influence many officials and employees were forced to remain silent. He created controversy by appointing his daughter Bushra Afrin as 'Chief Hit Officer'.

It is alleged that the family members were given control over various important projects of DNCC and benefits were obtained.
Public Prosecutor (PP) Omar Farooq Farooqui said, 'Without notification, former mayor Atiq appointed his daughter Bushra Afrin as Chief Heat Officer. In the history of Bangladesh, Bushra was given a salary of eight lakh taka per month. He mitigated the hit by pouring water on the road with a few cars.

He also said, "
The mayor of Dhaka North City Corporation was elected without a vote. Atiqul Islam He came into politics to evade crores of government revenue.'

Referring to Dhaka North North City, the highest number of people have died of dengue in Bangladesh, the lawyer said, 'There he was a close relative of the person who was responsible for bringing mosquito medicine. He has killed many people by bringing fake medicine instead of real medicine. We have told the court that a murder case should be filed against him for this reason.

Farooqui said, "When people and students were being shot dead during the quota movement, Atiqul Islam sang, played flute and danced with his friends. He tried many times to escape, but could not. If he gets bail, he will run away and create unrest in the country. So he cannot be granted bail at this time. The learned court, after hearing the arguments of the counsel for both the parties, refused his bail and directed him to be sent to jail.' Source: Voice of Time
