In Vijayanagar, the award of the upazila's best institution head of the education week to an expelled teacher has raised questions about the selection process. Apart from this, criticism, anger and protest are going on throughout the upazila regarding the irregularities and corruption even with some awards and participation of students in various competitions.
It is known that the prize distribution ceremony of National Education Week 2024 was held on Thursday at the Upazila Parishad conference room. But the rest of the prizes are given from the godown only by formalities. Mukundapur High School Principal Md. Abdul Hannan's office was expelled due to the corruption of 93 lakh rupees of the school with the audio record of accepting bribes going viral.
Still he has been selected as the best institution head of the upazila. However, he did not participate in the award distribution photo session to avoid controversy. Although there are several educational institutions with centuries-old, modern facilities, a new institution named Ubaidul Moktadir Chowdhury Vidyaniketan, named after the former Minister of Housing and Public Works, has been declared the best institution, which has caused a lot of controversy throughout the upazila.
On the other hand, although a student did not have the opportunity to participate in more than three subjects, a student of Islampur Alhaj Kazi Mohammad Shafiqul Islam College named Zakia Sultana Jannat was declared best in six categories including best class student, best rover, best ranger, Bengali essay, scheduled speech, debate.
Another student named Sabuj Ahmed Pinon of the same college was regularly adjudged the best in four categories including folk dance, high dance, prescribed speech, folk music. At the Newman crest distribution ceremony of Tk 180, many people present expressed their anger that the first few were officially distributed from the godown and said that this is the Newman crest, on the other hand, many crests are vandalized. There have also been cases of many coming to accept the award and returning empty-handed without receiving the crest. It does not make sense to call the upazila to insult them.
In this regard, Upazila Assistant Secondary Education Officer (Acting) Al Mamun said that some people have been elected to multiple positions as part of a team and individually. Moreover some selection is done to compete well in the district. Something was lost on the way to bring the crest from the district town. The head teacher of the institution was expelled a few days after being selected as the best in the upazila.
