Awami League leader Saidur Rahman Badal filed a case against 17-year-old Hafeez Abdul Mukit after he posted a fictional conversation about 'Awami League' on Facebook. A case was filed under Section 57 of the ICT Act and Mukit was arrested and imprisoned for three months.

In 2022, the cyber tribunal judge sentenced Mukit to 10 years rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Tk 10 lakh. He has been in jail since the verdict against him.

When Mukit applied for bail, the High Court granted him bail, but the Chamber Judge suspended it on the objection of the then Attorney General Amin Uddin.

In this situation of the case, there has been a lot of discussion about the issue on social media, which is questioning the boundaries of the law and freedom of speech in Bangladesh.

Mukit's house is in Haripur of Paba Upazila of Rajshahi. Laborer Riazul Islam and Ashrafun Nessa have five daughters and only son Abdul Mukit. Two of the girls are married. Apart from this, Mukit's elder Radia Ferdous studied at Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College in Bogra. Her younger sister Rakiba is studying at Jessore University of Science and Technology. The youngest Sumaiya Akhtar is studying in Rajshahi Government Model School and College.

All siblings are talented. But it was not possible for the poor father to run the cost of education. So since becoming Hafez, Mukit taught privately. Apart from running his own expenses, he also paid the expenses of his sisters. But while studying in the 10th standard at Kholabona Madrasa, on May 27, 2017, he posted an imaginary conversation between father and son on Facebook. In it he writes - Ayam comes from the word Awami, which means darkness. And 'League' means team. That is, Awami League means the party of darkness. The next day Haripur Union Awami League President and Ward No. 5 member Saidur Rahman Badal filed a case against Mukit at Paba Police Station under the ICT Act.

Among them, Hafez Mukit passed the exam from jail, Fazil (undergraduate) and Kamil (postgraduate). The results of his Kamil exam came out on October 3. He passed with a GPA of 3.50. After August 5, many sentenced in ICT cases during the Awami League government were released. But Hafez Mukit was not released or bailed.

Going to Mukit's house in Haripur, one can see that the bench is still lying in his private study room. The reading table is full of books. Mukit's mother Ashrafun Nessa broke down in tears talking about her imprisoned son. He said that after the fall of the government, many people who were imprisoned in false cases were released, but my son is not released. I demand to release my son from this false case.

Mukit's lawyer Mizanul Islam said the Facebook post is not Mukit's. But he is serving the sentence in a false case. His age was also not taken into consideration during sentencing. Even the statements made by the plaintiffs and witnesses were not taken into account in the judgment. Bail was granted in 2023 after an appeal against the verdict in the High Court. But due to the objection of the then Attorney General Amin Uddin, the Chamber judge court suspended the bail order. As a result, the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court upheld the stay and ordered the disposal of the appeal. Later, he was granted bail again on September 2 without disposing of the appeal. But the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court canceled his bail again. As a result, Mukit is still in prison. He did not get bail.

When contacted in this regard, Rajshahi Cyber Tribunal State Advocate Ismat Ara did not want to say anything. It should be noted that after August 5, Awami League leader Badal, the plaintiff in the case, left home and covered his body.
