Jumbangla Desk: The workers of Generation Next Ltd. are protesting by blocking the highway for the second day demanding three months salary arrears in the industrial area of Ashulia.
The workers started blockade and protest by taking position in Bypile Trimor area of Nabinagar-Chandra highway and Tongi-Ashulia-EPZ road from 8:30 am on Tuesday. Earlier, around 8 am, the workers from different areas of Ashulia came together with a procession and came to Bypile.
Along with the army, industrial police and district police are on the spot.
They talked to the workers and tried to remove them from the road, but the aggrieved workers said they would not leave the road until they were paid their salaries.
Meanwhile, due to road blockade in the morning, the common people including people going to office and school have suffered a lot. Due to heavy traffic on the road, two kilometers of traffic jam has been created on three sides of the road.
The aggrieved workers alleged that no salary bonus has been given since last three months.
The authorities have declared the factory closed for an indefinite period without paying him. He demanded that the workers be paid about Tk 52 crore in arrears immediately.
A factory worker, who did not want to be named, said that when we spoke to the owners several times to demand payment of the outstanding salary, they kept giving us various excuses. Although three months have passed, most of the workers have not received salary bonus. Apart from this, the factory staff also have four to five months salary arrears.
The workers also said that for the last three months, they have been spending their days with their families very hard. I am passing the day without eating a lot because of house rent and shop. I can't get a job anywhere. The factory announced closure earlier last month without paying one month's salary bonus.
Last month BGMEA and Ministry of Labor assured us. But three months salary has not been paid yet. So I was forced to come to the highway. The blockade will continue if the salary is not paid.
In this regard, Superintendent of Police of Shilpa Police-1 Sarwar Alam said, We have come to the spot. The workers of the Generation Next Limited factory have not received their salary for two months or more. Negotiations are ongoing with the owner. Workers' problems will be solved soon.
Relevantly, the workers of Generation Next Limited factory blocked the road from 10 am to evening on Monday. But due to no assurance from the administration or the owners, the affected workers are carrying out the blockade program for the second day.
